A 15-year-old will be charged as an adult in connection with a weekend shooting that wounded 11 people at Florida A&M University after the school's homecoming football game, authorities said Monday.
Tallahassee police said a fight broke out before the gunfire on Saturday night, and it appears none of the victims were intended targets. The youngest person hit is 11 years old.
Police arrested Anthony Rivers III on Sunday and charged him with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent. Court records did not indicate whether Rivers has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
The teen appeared at a brief court hearing Monday, where a judge ordered him to stay in jail. State Attorney Jack Campbell said prosecutors will move the case to adult court.
Campbell said a surveillance camera recorded part of the shooting. Investigators are still looking for additional video and hope to speak with witnesses so they can piece together exactly what happened.
The shooting broke out near a street corner just outside Bragg Memorial Stadium, after Florida A&M lost to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Eleven people were struck by gunfire, and one more person, a grandmother of one of the victims, was hurt while running from the scene. Police said six of the people injured were minors.
Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the area was so packed with people that ambulances could not reach the spot where the shooting happened. Officers instead carried the wounded through the crowds to emergency vehicles, which then took them to hospitals.
Revell described the shooting as the result of an isolated dispute involving just a few people. He said investigators are trying to identify others who may have been involved, and more arrests are possible.
Authorities said at least three of the victims suffered serious injuries. One person was in critical condition as of Sunday, police said, and no further updates on the wounded have been released.
Video that spread on social media showed people fleeing in terror from an area crowded with fans leaving the game and taking part in homecoming celebrations.
