A 15-year-old has been charged in connection with a mass shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee that left 12 people injured during Florida A&M University's homecoming weekend. Police say the teen, identified as Anthony Rivers, faces 11 counts of attempted first-degree murder and is expected to be charged as an adult, according to officials.

Eleven people were struck by gunfire, and a twelfth person suffered an ankle injury while running from the shots. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said six of the victims were minors, including an 11-year-old. Police said at least three people were seriously hurt.

The shooting took place at about 8 p.m. near Perry and Manatee streets, behind the stadium, as crowds were leaving a homecoming celebration. By Sunday morning, five victims had been released from the hospital and six remained hospitalized. One of those still in the hospital was in critical condition. No deaths have been reported.

Investigators' preliminary findings indicate that a fight broke out among people who knew one another shortly before the gunfire. Police said that at this stage, none of the victims appear to have been the intended targets. Video shared on social media showed people fleeing the area in fear.

Revell said the night turned violent for families who had come to celebrate. "What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families," he said. "While this arrest marks a significant step forward, our work is far from over." He added that the department remains committed to holding those responsible accountable and getting answers for every affected family.

The Tallahassee Police Department said officers rushed to help victims before the scene was fully secured and then began their investigation. Police credited tips and video from members of the community with helping to identify the suspected shooter. Additional arrests are possible.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department's tip line at 850-891-4610. People with photos, videos or other digital evidence can also send them through the department's online evidence submission portal.

Witnesses described the fear at the scene. A woman selling apparel for historically Black colleges and universities during homecoming told CNN affiliate WCTV she heard the gunshots and saw frightened people. Another witness told the station he had just left campus and was worried about his daughter, who was in the area.

Florida A&M said the shooting happened near campus and that the university remained safe. Homecoming events had run throughout the week and were set to conclude Sunday at the historically Black university, which has nearly 10,000 students. University President Marva Johnson said the school had contacted injured members of the FAMU community to offer support and urged anyone with information to contact police. Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey called the shooting "a truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy" and said the community stood with the university.
